Greyhound Walks, although organised walks (with walk rules) are also very informal, you don't have to book in or anything like that, if you fancy coming, just come along. But if you've not been to a walk before you may well be thinking, what do we do, where do we go, do we need to register ... here's a few answers to questions you may have.
Who can go to a Greyhound Walk? - anyone with a pet greyhound or lurcher is welcome to join our walks (or without a greyhound if you'd like to try one out!).
Do we have to be registered with Greyhound Walks? - nope, we have no membership as such, although we do hold people's contact details if they want to be on our mailing list.
How do we join a walk? - essentially turn up on the day. If you can arrive 10-15 minutes before the start time that's a good idea. The walk leaders try hard to spot new people and have a chat before the walk to make you feel welcome and buddy you up with an experienced walker.
Do I have to let anyone know I'm coming? - nope, but if you want to post a message on the forum to say you're coming then everyone will look out for you and make sure you're given a warm welcome. Alternatively you can email info@greyhoundwalks.org.uk if you want any more information
How far do you walk? - hard to say how far as we base the walks on time. We walk for around an hour at a pace that suits you, your greyhound and the conditions. Wherever possible there'll be a shorter route for older dogs who are much slower walkers.
Does my dog need to wear a muzzle? - if you've only recently got your greyhound please bring their muzzle. If it's a very keen greyhound we'd recommend it's worn until you know your greyhound well enough to know what it's reactions will be. Inevitably on the walk there are other dogs off lead and those little ones are very good at getting between a greyhounds legs which can be a flash point. The motto is, it's ok to wear a muzzle, if in doubt put it on
Is there a charge? - nope, we make no charge but we do have a contributions bucket at the end of each walk for you to make a donation if you want to.
Can I bring other dogs? - sorry no, the walks are primarily for greyhounds and lurchers and we do allow other sighthounds (PM me if you have one of these). Twice a year we have a GreyhoundPLUS walk where other breeds are allowed.
What are the walk rules? - we have the rules for the safety of all the dogs on the walk and to demonstrate that we are responsible dog owners.
1. All dogs are to be kept on lead
2. Dogs to be muzzled when needed
3. Be aware of and considerate to other users of the facilty
4. Always pick up after your dog and dispose of it in a bin provided
5. Have a good time
